Big Ideas

British Columbia followed a unique path in becoming part of Canada.

The pursuit of valuable natural resources has played a key role in changing the land, people and communities of Canada

Activities

We will investigate economic and political factors that influenced the colonization of British Columbia and it's entry into confederation.  We will examine the gold rush population boom and bust.

We will create a timeline of key events of BC History.

Students will be able to choose an event to research and present to the class.

Terms 1 & 2

Big Idea Interactions between First Peoples and Europeans led to conflict and cooperation which continues to shape Canada's identity.

Indigenous Peoples: Who are the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis in Canada

Indigenous peoples have lived in the country we now call Canada for thousands of years.  In Social Studies, we are going to use inquiry processes to investigate the following Big Ideas:

1. Interactions between Indigenous Peoples and Europeans lead to conflict can cooperation which continues to shape Canada's identity
2. The pursuit of valuable natural resources has played a key role in changing the land, people and communities of Canada.

Kwikwetlem First Nation Website

Students are learning to gather information, take notes and prepare presentations.(Truth and Reconciliation Assembly, Remembrance Day Assembly and learning about Jordan's Principle, Ambearrister Program, Kwikwetlem First Nation and Have a Heart Day to present to younger grades)

Students are learning to read maps and charts.(term 1 game with the atlas - Where in the world is Mrs. Elie, the compass rose, lines of latitude and longitude.)

Students are learning the history of the Kwikwetlem First Nation.

Students are learning about the impact of residential school system.

Students are learning how to apply a variety of strategies for information gathering(glossaries, text features, indices, and internet searches.)
