Celebration of Learning

This is a copy of the letter and planner message sent home last week

A “Celebration of Learning” for students can take many forms.  This year, students have collected work in their binder to share with parents.  In addition, students are encouraged to share with parents some of the technology platforms that we have used.

 

The format will be open house style.  No reservations/appointments are required.  The classroom will be open on Wednesday, May 8^th from 1:45pm – 5:30pm and on Thursday, May 9^th, from 1:45pm-3:30pm.  Families are welcome to come at their most convenient time; please be prepared to spend 10-15 minutes with your child.

 

The focus of a “Celebration of Learning” or “Student-Led Conference” is for the students to share information with their families.  By grade 4 & 5 students are very good at doing this.  Each student chooses things to share with their family.

 

I know that families have busy schedules.  If you are unable to come to the “Celebration of Learning” at the school, a “take-out” version is available.  For families who were unable to come on Wednesday or Thursday, students will take-home their binder on Friday May 10th, share it with families and return it to school on Monday May 13th.  The most important part is providing time for families to engage in conversations about some of the learning at school.

 

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning, a parent-teacher interview may be arranged for a different time.  Simply send an email and I will schedule a meeting.

Black History Month

Featured Artist - Ekow Nimako

In class, we looked at the artwork of Ekow Nimako.  As an optional homework challenge, students were asked to create art inspired by Ekow Nimako. Using building bricks, such as Lego, create a structure or statue that reflects your culture. What will you create? Will it be a symbol? Will it be something that you use? Build a model to express who you are! 

When you are finished, write an artist reflection sheet explaining your design choices. Why did you create what you did?

 Happy Lunar New Year!

This post is a little bit late.  Lunar New Year began on February 10th.  You can learn more about Lunar New Year here.  February is a very, very busy month.  You will see there is a Black History Month page  on this website, see the link to your right.  Please take some time to read about the amazing accomplishments of Black Canadians.  In addition, during the month of February, we created presentations and celebrated Have a Heart Day with our kindergarten buddies.  Please check out our Reconciliation Ambearrister page to see what we have been learning.

On February 13th, we watched an online safety presentation, Safer Spaces, by "Children of the Street."  It was an interactive presentation geared specifically for intermediate students to learn about online exploitation and how to keep themselves safe when online or using apps.  This presentation supports our Physical and Health Education and is vetted by SD43.  We also spent some time working on our digital citizenship and learning about privacy.  It is very important to not share private information online.  

On February 16th, we will be creating cards for Family Appreciation Day so that we can honour all the adults that care for us.  Remember Pink Shirt Day is on February 28th this year and we will attend an assembly in the gym.

Happy New Year!

We got off to a great start so far.  For some students, Jan 11th was the first time they had seen snow!  Please remember to dress for the weather.  This month we are looking forward to the Moody Elementary School tradition of tennis with Marcus who is a professional tennis coach.  We are also making preparations for Have a Heart Day by planning presentations for K-4 classes.  Part of our preparations will include watching the video, "Spirit Bear and the Children Make History" so that we can select clips to play for other classes.

The Count Down to Winter Break Begins

 Lots of fun activities take place in December at Moody Elementary; students can search for Elf on the Shelf and practice their song for our Winter Concert, "A Warm December Night."  Our class will be performing on Tuesday, December 12th at 1:15 and 6:30 pm.  Due to fire regulations, seating is limited for the evening concert time.  Tickets will be going home for families.

On December 4th, in honour of National Cookie Day, we illustrated and wrote sentences about our favourite or ultimate cookie.  Then students were invited to take one of Mrs. Elie's homemade cookies.  This complimented our Science learning about our senses, particularly, taste.

On December 15th, our school is celebrating Sweater Day and students are invited to wear a sweater of their choice.  Report cards will be available through myed on December 20th.  Make sure you can access your myed account.  If you have any questions, please contact the school office.

December 22nd, the last day of school before Winter Break, we will be having a comfy clothes/PJ day.  There may even be a hot chocolate treat that day too.

For many Christians, the season of Advent began on Sunday, December 3rd.

Hanukkah(Chanukah) begins on December 7th and continues until December 15th

Winter Solstice is on December 21st this year.  For many people, including Indigenous people, this is a meaningful celebration.

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are holidays observed in BC that occur during our Winter Break.  

Many celebrations in December include candles and lights.  What ways does your family celebrate in December? Did you remember to send a photo to the office to include in our school display?

 Wow! It's November already!

Hello Everyone!  We have been very busy learning and having fun.  Since the Halloween Parade on Oct 31, we have learned about Indigenous Veteran's Day, memorized a musical version of the "In Flanders Fields" poem and presented our learning about the Coast Salish Anthem to the school for our Remembrance Day Assembly today.  We received our first postcard from a class in Toronto who is also reading "A Rover's Story, " as part of the Global Read Aloud.

In Science we are working on a Unit, "Sensing and Responding."  So far, we tried to determine how much our nose, knows.  In Social Studies, we were reading about some of the contributions of Indigenous Veterans.  Also, we have been using resources from the First Nation's Caring Society to learn about Jordan's Principle and how kids can make a difference, no matter how small.

We have started to meet with our Kindergarten Buddies.  We are practicing our oral reading and leadership skills.  Being a Big Buddy is a lot of fun and we are really showing a lot of kindness and caring when we meet with Ms. Dunbar's class.

In Math, we practiced the traditional algorithms for addition and subtraction of multidigit numbers and worked on our addition and subtraction fact fluency.  We also played with patterns, and input & output machines, Algebra, here we come!

Congratulations to Scarlett for winning the Diwali Writing Contest put on by the Port Moody Museum.  Scarlett will be turning on the winter lights at the Museum to mark the start of Diwali on Sunday, November 12 at 6:30 pm.  The POMO Museum would like to invite families to come and experience the magic.  There will be a Hot Chocolate reception on the 1921 train car afterwards.

Welcome to Division 2 - 2023-2024 School Year

 It is hard to believe it is already October.  September was very busy this year.  We had our Welcome Back Assembly, Terry Fox Assembly, and our Truth and Reconciliation Honouring Gathering where we listened to the story of residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad, founder of Orange Shirt Day.  In addition, we created our Class Charter, participated in the school Terry Fox run, enjoyed an Open House with BBQ for families, and introduced the school to our Ambearrister when our class led the Truth and Reconciliation Honouring Gathering.

October is also filled with fun events.  We start with our first ever "Turkey Trot," on October 5th complete with Pie Draw Assembly.  Next we will have a Ho Down and a "Surprise" event on October 25th.  Please remember to bring a sturdy bag.  Finally our annual Halloween parade on Oct 31 after the morning announcements.  Grade 4s will also complete FSAs and we should begin the Global Read Aloud book, A Rover's Story.  Finally, during this month, interim reports will be sent home and there will be early dismissal days for parents who want to meet with Mrs. Elie.  Details will be sent home soon!

Term 3 - The Final Stretch

Welcome Back from Spring Break!  Hopefully you were able to do some things that you like to do.  I know many were looking forward to sleeping in.  We have many activities and exciting things to learn during Term 3.  Stay tuned and check planners for details about upcoming fieldtrips and special events at school.  For example: April is National Poetry Month, April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day and our school will be celebrating Diversity Week from April 24-28.

Also, Ramadan Kareem for those who observe.  Here is a link to some information to explain one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims throughout the globe. Ramadan: Be good to yourself; be good to others.  This year, Ramadan is observed from March 22-April 20th.

Welcome to another school year for Division 2

September at Moody Elementary started with our schoolwide read of the book, We Move Together, created by the author-illustrator team of Kelly Fritsch, Anne McGuire, and Eduardo Trejos.  You can learn more about the team here.  We learned that it is everyone's responsibility to make sure that everybody is included.  This means we need to pay attention to accessibility so that we can all move together with no one left behind.  Inspired by the book, many of us created interesting visual art with textures so that our art could be enjoyed even if a person is blind or has limited sight.  This helped us to think about how our art feels to the audience looking at it as well as to those touching it.

On September 12, we became a class and we have been working on creating a Class Charter so that we can learn together in a way that works for all of us.  We decided that at school, we want to feel: safe, respected, creative, calm, independent, comfortable and joyful.  In order for all of us to be able to experience these feelings, we have some responsibilities too.

To help us find a way when things aren't working, we "watched" the wordless book, "I Forgive Alex.'  We are working to create text to describe this story.

This month, we also learned about Terry Fox, attended our school's Terry Fox assembly, designed our own Terry Fox sneaker, and participated in our school run on September 16.  We were very thankful for the beautiful weather for our run.

We are looking forward to our Open House, PAC BBQ, Truth and Reconciliation Week and our Orange Shirt Day Assembly as some of the final highlights for September 2022.

The Final Countdown

 Well, this school year is almost finished.  There are a few exciting events happening so make sure to check student planners.  Students were provided with an online course to review word and number skills for grades 4-6.  The course is called Summer Slugger and students can access it with their Everfi account here: SUMMER SLUGGER LOGIN.  From cookie archaeology to hatching ducklings, students have participated in a variety of fun activities this year.  On Friday, we will officially celebrate the Grade 5s as they get ready to move on to Middle School adventures in the 2022-2023 school year.  Have a safe and enjoyable summer break!  Grade 4s, we look forward to welcoming you back next year!

 Diversity Week at Moody Elementary

Hopefully students have been sharing information about the many Diversity Week activities we have been doing at our school.  In anticipation of diversity week, we watched 3 Crows Theatre Production of Indigenous Storytelling in the gym where we learned about stories and place names of the lands and waters of the Coast Salish People.

On Tuesday, we were fortunate to have a virtual author visit from Danny Ramadan who read his book, Salma the Syrian Chef.

We also went on a Virtual Fieldtrip to the Museum of Anthropology and looked at : Shadows, Strings and Other Things We were fortunate to also have the museum's toolkit so we could actually try out some of the puppet and learn about some of the stories throughout the world.

 We have almost completed our novel study of the City of Ember.  In March and April, our Science lessons will focus on studying Energy.  As part of this learning, we will participate in some the challenges that are part of the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge.

February and Forever

During the month of February, our class will investigate the contributions of Black Canadians to Canadian society.  Many students are unaware of the significant struggles and successes of Black Canadians through the centuries.  Hopefully students and families will learn something new.

Welcome to another school year.  This website is still under construction as we decide what types of things we want to learn and do.  We have started our novel study, The Wild Robot.  In Science we are studying the question: How do living things sense, respond, and adapt to stimuli in their environment?  Learning about the 5 senses and Biomes, helps us study this question.
